< Previous7. POP! CULTURE If That Ain’t Catholic, Tell Me, What Is?: Cowboy Carter and the Spirit of Vatican II Stephen McNulty '25 At the end of the year, it’s a foregone conclusion that Beyoncé will be my top Spotify artist. I’ve streamed her newest album, Cowboy Carter, more times than I'd like to admit, and for good reason. Cowboy Carter is a genre-defying achievement: it is at once an old Western radio ballad, an electrifying hip hop track, and even an Italian aria. More fundamentally, though, it’s a country album through and through, replete with cameos from Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson along with fl ashbacks to country’s Black roots. As the album’s fi rst song, “Ameriican Requiem,” so pointedly asks, “If that ain’t country, tell me, what is?” Yet as Beyoncé explained in an Instagram post, “This ain’t a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.” So which is it? In a way, Cowboy Carter is “ever ancient, ever new,” as Beyoncé reinvents and reinvigorates an old genre with a deep-rooted new life. Whatever the recording industry bigwigs in Nashville might say, Beyoncé is country.8. Stephen McNulty '25 is a senior in Pauli Murray College and chair of STM’s LGBTQ Ministry. Cowboy Carter is also Beyoncé’s most explicitly religious album, with religious motifs framing the entire work. In “Ameriican Requiem,” the singer insists, “I am the one to cleanse me of my father’s sins.” Twenty-six tracks later, we end up somewhere quite similar and yet quite diff erent: “We'll be the ones that purify our father's sins.” Our purifi cation from sin—our baptism, if you will— is at once an individual act and a communal one. Catholics can recognize this cadence: the delicate dance between an intimately personal salvation and the collective redemption of God’s people in time and space. It also begs the question: whose sins are we cleansing? A few obvious answers come to mind. The fi rst is personal: we cleanse ourselves of our generational baggage (see “Daughter”). The second is musical: we cleanse ourselves of a genre which has too oft en ignored Black voices. The third is political: we cleanse America of its original sins. If we’re to have any life in us, we must be washed in the waters of rebirth. This isn’t an abandonment, but quite the opposite. Beyoncé is “her father’s daughter,” writing an album with deep country roots while carrying an American fl ag. As she makes clear to us, Beyoncé has “planted her bare feet on solid ground.” And all the classics are there. For goodness sake, Cowboy Carter has a cover of “Jolene,” with lead-in commentary from Dolly herself. If that ain’t country, tell me, what is? The album’s metanarrative about change, rebirth, and rooted reimagination beyond rigid boundaries is its most Christian attribute, and is even more Catholic than a song literally about “rosaries” and “stained-glass symphonies.” It is, in short, the spirit of Vatican II and aggiornamento. The Church must constantly reimagine and reinvent itself from the margins, by drawing in new voices and by making dialogue with new perspectives, while “planting its bare feet on solid ground.” To be Church today is to respectfully imagine how the working of the Holy Spirit might make something new out of this ancient experiment. To be Church today is to confi dently throw an aria into a country album, and in so doing help the genre recover a spirit it has always had, deep down somewhere. Our Church is led by the Holy Spirit, aft er all. Surely we can aff ord some ostentatious boldness. Beyoncé will not let us delay any further in the work of rebirth. She asks us pointedly, “Now is the time to let love in. Together, can we stand?” If the Church is to stand at all, let alone wash ourselves in rebirth, we need the courage to let love in. n9. Faith in Color: How Multicultural Ministries Enrich Our STM Community Tesse Okunseri '25 As one of the leaders of Saint Thomas More’s African American (AfAm) Ministry for the past two years, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that multicultural ministries can have on students like me. Such ministries not only enrich our spiritual lives but also allow us to explore the intersection of our cultural identities and our Catholic faith, an invaluable opportunity. As a Black student, the AfAm Ministry has always been a unique space where I can engage with both my culture and my faith. Catholicism, like many global faith traditions, is shaped by the diversity of its followers, yet there are few spaces where this diversity is celebrated. AfAm Ministry, alongside STM’s other multicultural ministries, helps fill this gap by fostering a community that honors both faith and culture. These ministries allow myself and others to deepen our understanding of how culture and Catholicism can interact, enriching both in the process. Adaolisa Ezekobe '24 M.A. serves as lector during the Black Catholic History Month Mass at Saint Thomas More Chapel. CATHOLICISM IS A GLOBAL FAITH WHICH IS ENRICHED BY DIVERSE EXPERIENCES. " “ – Tesse Okunseri '25 10. Multicultural ministries also provide opportunities to engage with issues of social justice, culture, and spirituality. One memorable event was the March 2023 screening of Going Home Like a Shooting Star, a documentary on Sister Thea Bowman — a trailblazing Black, Catholic nun, saint-to-be, and civil rights icon. After the screening, the audience had a thought-provoking Q&A session with the film’s writer and producer, Franciscan Sister Judith Ann Zielinski. It was a powerful moment that showed us how deeply intertwined faith, history, and activism were. Another memorable event was last fall’s discussion of Racial Justice and the Catholic Church by Father Bryan Massingale. This book encouraged us to grapple with critical social justice issues from a Catholic perspective, sparking spiritual reflection and a deeper commitment to living out the gospel in our daily lives. The most meaningful impact of these ministries is the sense of community they foster because of the inclusive environment they create. For example, last fall, the AfAm Ministry celebrated Nigerian Independence Day with a social event, since many Black Catholics are of Nigerian descent, like me. Naturally, this event was of personal significance to me, but it was even more special because students from all backgrounds came together to celebrate with us. It reminded me that our faith is something we live in communion with others. STM’s multicultural ministries also collaborate with other cultural and faith-based organizations at Yale, building a broader sense of belonging. Two years ago, the AfAm Ministry teamed up with the Yale Gospel Choir to have them perform at the Black Catholic History Month and Black History Month Masses, a collaboration that continues to this day. The AfAm Ministry is also working towards receiving a certification from Yale’s Afro-American Cultural Center, which will further connect STM with Yale’s broader Black community. The AfAm Ministry’s outreach extends beyond Yale as well. In October, we held a talk by Howard University campus minister Ali Mumbach. Bringing in voices from other institutions keeps us connected to the wider Catholic and cultural communities, grounding us in the broader Church and its mission. The impact of programs like STM’s multicultural ministries goes beyond fostering a faith-filled, culturally conscious community. It also has a tangible effect on the mental health and overall well-being of Catholic students from underrepresented groups. It reminds us that Catholicism is a global faith which is enriched by diverse experiences. For many like me, finding a Catholic, faith-based community was a key priority when coming to Yale, and the multicultural ministries have played a central role in making STM a “home away from home.” This sense of belonging is crucial to student retention, particularly for those who might otherwise feel isolated in a demanding academic environment such as Yale. Through these ministries, STM is building a more inclusive and culturally vibrant Catholic community while positively impacting students on a daily basis. n Tesse Okunseri '25 is a senior in Jonathan Edwards College and chair of STM’s African American Ministry. Meet Pauline Little Pauline, originally from the Philippines and raised on the West Coast, brings extensive campus ministry experience as well as five years as a clinical chaplain at Yale Hospital to STM. She is excited to lead STM’s graduate ministry and help plan Alternative Spring Break trips. Whom would you choose if you could be friends with a fictional character? I would love to be friends with Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation. She is loyal, creative, caring, smart, passionate, and super funny! What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Working as a clinical chaplain at Yale Hospital through COVID and beyond was both challenging and a profound privilege, supporting patients and families in grief. It’s an experience that will shape me for years to come. What was your dream job as a child? I wanted to be like Oprah. What is one of your favorite Bible quotes? “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!’” (Mark 9:24) Meet Henry Ginna Henry earned his M.A.R. from Yale Divinity School in 2019 and was welcomed into the Catholic Church at St. Mary’s in New Haven in 2018. As STM’s new Development Manager, he is eager to build and strengthen relationships with STM’s alumni and donors. Tell us something you learned in the last week. It's a lesson that I find myself “learning” over and over again—there is no substitute for spending time with someone in person and being present. What was the hardest thing you ever had to do? Leave the Episcopal Seminary and become a full member of the Catholic Church. It was also the easiest thing I ever did. I took all my fears and gave them up to God and He showed me the way. What was your dream job as a child? I grew up reading a lot of paperback crime novels, Sherlock Holmes, etc., so I thought being a private detective would be super cool. What is one of your favorite Bible quotes? “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all die but we will all be changed...” (1 Corinthians 15:51) Meet the New Faces of STM This fall, STM welcomed five new team members to its leadership family. Two assistant chaplains have stepped in to fill roles left by outgoing chaplains, while three new professional staff bring fresh perspectives— one in a brand-new position and two in from roles formerly held by consultants. Their energy, expertise, and passion promise to make our community even stronger. Ready to get to know them? We’ve asked each a few fun and insightful questions to help you do just that.Meet Colin Hoch Colin, STM’s new Education Coordinator, earned his Ph.D. in History and Early Modern Studies from Yale in 2024. He is passionate about history and culture and is committed to developing education programs that connect Yale’s Catholic community with the rich traditions of its faith. What is the #1 most played song on your playlist? I'm on a ' 90s country kick right now, so it’s “Neon Moon” by Brooks and Dunn. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Reconciling the fact that you can love someone and still not be compatible to go through life together. What was your dream job as a child? A knight or a historian, so unless I'm ready to audition at “Medieval Times” there's one option left. What is one of your favorite Bible quotes? “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, for there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9) 12. Meet Dan Dunphy Dan is STM’s new Finance Manager. He joins the STM team after a decade of experience working alongside Fr. Ryan at the Archdiocese of Hartford. If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would that be? Forty-five—old enough to have wisdom but the knees don’t hurt yet. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Bury my parents. What was your dream job as a child? Firefighter. What is one of your favorite Bible quotes? “He who is the greatest among you shall be your servant.” (Matthew 23:11) Meet Sr. Mary Rose Irvine, F.S.E. Sister Mary Rose, a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist, grew up in the Nebraska heartland, earning her B.A. in social work from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In her role as Assistant Chaplain at STM, she guides undergraduates through the OCIA program, helping them explore the Catholic faith. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Skydiving. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Learning who I am, and not just identifying myself with what I do. What was your dream job as a child? Forensic pathology. What is one of your favorite Bible quotes? “Commit your way to the LORD. Trust in Him and He will act.” (Psalm 37:5)13. In Gratitude Saint Thomas More Supporters 2023-2024 Many thanks to all those who contributed to STM last fiscal year. As we look forward to the next one hundred years of Catholic chaplaincy at Yale, your support allows students to grow in their faith through transformative experiences, deepen their understanding of Catholic teaching, and build a sense of community among Catholics at Yale. STM Donor Spotlight: Meet Paul Tierney '61 After Yale and a year of graduate school, Paul Tierney married and fulfilled his ROTC commitment with three years of active duty, after which he launched a thirty-four-year career in information technology, first with General Electric and later with Lockheed-Martin, retiring in 2000. Retirement didn’t slow Paul down, though— he went on to teach physics at a private school for two decades. Now fully retired, he still tutors and substitute teaches when needed. Throughout his life, Paul has been a committed Catholic, giving generously of his time, talent, and resources. A founding member of his parish’s Stewardship Council, he has served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector and is part of a team bringing weekly Communion to a continuing care community. For decades, Saint Thomas More at Yale has held a special place in Paul’s heart. Supporting Catholic students during a life-shaping time, especially in a secular environment, is deeply important to him. A heartfelt visit from Fr. Bob Beloin and Kerry Robinson helped confirm his decision to make STM the recipient of a legacy gift—a gift he hopes will inspire future generations. Mr. & Mrs. Stephen C.
